Points of Pride:
- Supervised law student interns that have gained experience through Students’ Legal Assistance now proudly serve with distinction as judges, University Legal Counsel, and legal staff in many federal, state, county, and local offices.
- The Students' Legal Assistance staff has worked diligently with local government officials to enact ordinance protection for Carbondale renters and to address many legal issues that affect the region.
- Students’ Legal Assistance provides important legal information to all SIUC students through news media, their internet website, office brochures, and frequent class and on campus housing presentations.
- The Director of Students’ Legal Assistance, Steve Rogers, received the "Elizabeth Berg Streeter Community Service Award" in 2004. This is a national award for “service to the legal community, social justice, and equality" and was presented by the NLADA (National Legal Aid and Defense Attorneys ).
Did you know:
- The SIUC Students' Legal Assistance was opened in April 1977, over thirty years ago. Since that time we have provided legal help on a wide range of legal issues to over 30,000 SIU students. Legal problems solved and critical legal information provided helps to increase student retention.
- The Students' Legal Assistance employs two full time attorneys, a full time civil service office manager, three or more law student interns, and four student workers. Our annual budget of approximately $200,000 is generated by a modest $5 per semester student fee without any additional user fees.
- The Students Legal Assistance office handles an average of four adoptions per year.
