State of the Art Programs and Services:
- Primary care services from a comprehensive staff of family physicians, emergency room specialist, internist, psychiatrist and clinical psychologist, sports medicine specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and orthopedists.

- The only Student Health Center in Illinois and one of a handful of health services nationwide that include a student dental service, providing important emergency and routine dental care.
- One of the country’s first comprehensive wellness programs in a college health service, including individual and group counseling and programming in nutrition, stress management, alcohol and drug prevention/treatment, women’s health and sexuality and outreach programming such as the Student Health Assessment Center (SHAC) located in the Student Center.
- A sports medicine and physical therapy program that provides seamless care for athletic and other related injuries through a comprehensive profession staff consisting of a sports medicine physician, sports medicine fellow (training program), athletic trainers, physical therapist and physical therapy assistants. This program is an integrated and collaborative effort between the Student Health Center, Intercollegiate Athletics, Physical Therapy Assistant training program, School of Medicine and the Student Recreation Center.
- An industry leading self-funded self-administered student medical insurance program, processing over 16,000 claims totaling over $5.5 million dollars annually.
Training, Learning and Research.
- Training and clinical experience opportunities for campus academic programs such as: physical therapy assistants, dental hygienist, physician assistants, pharmacy students, health care management internships, athletic training students, graduate assistantships for student from health education, counseling and psychology programs
- The SHC hosts the Core Institute, a nationally recognized center of research and expertise on student behavior as it relates to alcohol and drugs.

- The Student Health Center is the newest component of a facility that includes the Student Recreation Center and Counseling Center, making it one of the nation’s largest facilities geared toward student health, fitness and well-being.
- The new Student Health Center is the first center in the nation to include medical, dental, pharmaceutical, wellness, counseling, sports medicine, physical therapy, medical insurance, optical and dermatology services within one facility.
- The SIUC Student Health Program has a long and successful history tracing it’s origin to the first health service facility located in the first floor of Davies Gymnasium under President Shryock’s leadership.
- The SHC Student Emergency Dental Service began operations in 1974, located at the School of Technical Careers (now CASA), making it one of the first student programs in the country.
- The establishment of the Wellness Center in 1978, beginning a nationwide trend on college campuses. Several former Wellness Center employees are now in leadership positions in similar centers across the country.
- The Student Health Center was constructed using current seismic codes and is designated to serve as an emergency response center for campus disasters such as earthquakes.
- Carbondale’s Mayor, Brad Cole, served as the chair of the Student Health Advisory Board while an undergraduate at SIUC.
- The Student Health Center has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) since 1996.
- Cosmo Girl magazine recently ranked SIUC Student Health Center in the top five of college health centers providing women’s health services in the nation.
- The SHC Medical Clinic operates on an innovative “Open-Access” scheduling system, affording students the option of a same-day appointment.
- The SHC is a long-time institutional member of the American Collage Health Association (ACHA) and its regional affiliation, Mid-America College Health Association. SHC has hosted three annual MACHA annual meetings and several SHC staff has served in leadership roles at the national and regional levels.
- In the early 1980’s, the Director of SHC, organized and hosted the first annual meetings of Student Health Directors within Illinois. This eventually became established as the Illinois Consortium Of Student Health Programs, a bi-annual meeting of college health professionals who collaborate on common issues.
